Seafreight Protocol: Gas Measurements for Incoming Containers

To prioritize the safety of our personnel, Amsterdam Warehouse Company has updated its seafreight protocols for incoming containers, especially focusing on gas measurements. These adjustments ensure that containers are safe to handle and free of harm

Why Gas Measurements?

Certain products and regions carry a higher risk of emitting harmful gases during transportation. Through gas measurements, we can detect and mitigate these risks early. This proactive approach helps us identify containers that may need extra handling procedures to ensure safe unloading and inspection.

Protocol for Gas Measurements

We conduct gas measurements in two cases:

  1. Mandatory Checks During FYCO (Physical Control by Customs): For all containers selected by Customs for physical control, we conduct gas measurements as part of the FYCO inspection.
  2. Additional Random Checks Based on Origin and Product Type: For certain products and origins, we conduct random checks to ensure all shipments meet our safety standards.

Zero-Point Measurement Process

Starting from March 6th, each new supplier undergoes an initial "zero-point measurement," where we measure gas levels in two consecutive containers with the same product type and origin from the same supplier. If both measurements show no harmful gases, the supplier is added to our "green list," reducing the frequency of measurements to 1 in every 10 containers.

High-Risk Products

The following products are more likely to emit harmful gases and, therefore, are always subject to gas measurements:

  • Foodstuffs (excluding alcoholic beverages)
  • Clothing
  • Cotton
  • Footwear
  • Toys
  • Cosmetics
  • Wood/wooden products
  • Products susceptible to pests/rot

Costs

Our costs for gas measurements remain unchanged:

  • Initial Gas Measurement/FYCO: €125
  • Subsequent Measurements (if gas detected): €75
